Warum eigentlich sehen wir weltweit nur die 20 zentralen Kunstpositionen oder ihre Variationen durch fleißige Kunststudierende, Künstler und Künstlerinnen ... wo doch in den Schubladen, Wohnzimmern oder den verlassenen Schweineställen der Republik die spannenden Werke „der Anderen“ liegen, derer, die im Glücksspiel Kunst ausgeschieden oder schlicht übersehen worden sind: unbeachtete Meisterwerke, ignoriert und zum Verstauben verurteilt.
Versteckt sich nicht längst die Kunst mit Seele in den Werken der Autodidakten und Zurückgezogenen?
„Die Bilder der Anderen“ ist ein Anfang, ein erster Schritt in die Wahrheit der Authentizität oder in den Sumpf der Artikulationslosigkeit.

Talk: Games with Frontiers #Decad

Games with Frontiers
A two-day symposium organised by the artist Philip Kojo Metz
in English 

On 29 and 30 October, diverse perspectives surrounding Philip Kojo Metz’s project, The Mimicry Games, will be offered and its broader themes addressed by an interdisciplinary series of presenters including Ann Schomburg, Stefanie Sylla, Ismal Duá, Monika Kalinauskaitė, Sascha Boldt and Zeina Idris.

Taking football as the medium – within the context of the UEFA European Championship – The Mimicry Games approaches the history of European colonization of Africa by forming a visual and physical connection between the sport and this history. Shifting the location of the European Cup to its colonial counterpart on the African continent, the project places African football players in competition against each other, while uniformed in the national team jerseys of their former colonizers. As the 2016 European Cup was held in France, The Mimicry Games were carried out in Senegal, a former French colony, and were internationally and intercontinentally broadcasted and discussed in a series of public viewings and studio talks. Through this widely accessible game that establishes connections on an international scale, the work addresses notions of national identity, processes of cultural exchange, mimesis and the remnants of a colonial past.

Contributions on the first day of the symposium will consider the relationships and interactions between the African and European continents. On the second day, the presentations will expand the scope of the topic, examining possible parallels in other cultures and continents.

Groupshow: community based Decad, Berlin

Join us for the second production in Decad's new storefront.

'Community-Based' presents a series of long-term, socially-engaged projects realised by artists and other cultural workers, specifically located in Berlin. At the opening, the work of six collectives will be presented, and over the course of the following ten weeks, artists and works will progressively be added. A corresponding lecture programme will ensue. In keeping with the exhibition's title, this ongoing collection of materials will rely on community-based research in a move to supplement the already published and well-known works in this genre of community-based art production. At the end of the exhibition's run, all materials will be added to Decad's growing archive on the social place of art.

Immediately prior to the opening reception, the artist Mathilde ter Heijne will speak on her work in Decad's Hinterhaus lecture space. Ter Heijne is one of the primary six artists to be included in 'Community-Based'. Her artist talk will begin at 18:00. The reception is scheduled to run from 19:00 to 22:00
